I’ve been asked to make a few comments in the blog about making a Will. I have to admit to being a bit wary about bringing up this topic. Not because I don’t think it’s important- it is very important. As a solicitor I would advise anyone who owns any property to make a Will. This is usually inexpensive and worth having a professional draft for you. However, I think many people avoid this and like to put it on the long finger- Hence my reluctance to bring it up!

I recently received a flyer from a charity with the headline “let your legacy live on with a gift to (insert charity) in your Will”.  Many of us give regular donations throughout our lives to many different types of charities and that is important and benefits all of society. I think that as I get older, I am thinking more about what really counts in life. For us as Christians, it is the eternal that motivates us and the church’s influence in our community that can truly benefit people around us in every circumstance.

Maybe you would think about whether it’s time you made a Will or make an update to a previous one. If you are doing that you might think about whether you can afford to leave a gift to our church. This would allow Gods work in our local area to carry on to future generations.  It is heartbreaking to watch a lost and broken world stumble around us and know that we have the Truth and the Life dwelling among us. As Christian’s we know we can share God with our community and bring God’s peace and love to so many families and households.

A gift in your Will can be for any amount that you choose. No amount is too small. If you have a large estate, the church is a registered charity and any gift would be free of inheritance tax.  If this is something that you would like to know more about ask me or your own solicitor. As I said, solicitors will always advise you to make a Will and will happily spend time discussing your circumstances and what you need.
